Day 98 Tuesday 17.05.2011
Location:  Neef Stellplatz, Mosel Valley, Germany
Long / Lat: N 50º05.550’ E 7º08.550’
We headed for a stellplatz in Neef today, this is probably the longest drive we will do while we are in the Mosel Valley. The Mosel runs for 195km from Kolenz to Trier and as we head south towards Trier there are more than 30 stellplatze to choose from.
We are parked on grass next to one of the many bridges that cross the Mosel, we have a view of the river. The stellplatz has electric hook up, drinking water and a service point located just before the parking area. We think it costs about 6€ to stay for 24 hours, there is no ticket machine so we are expecting someone to come around later to collect the money.
On the stellplatz information board there are photos taken in January this year showing the stellplatz completely under water when the Mosel burst its banks, looks like it was under several feet of water.
There is yet again a railway line running behind the stellplatz but is doesn’t seem as busy as the track we parked beside yesterday.
When we arrived here it was very noisy, there was a helicopter flying around spraying the vines on the hillside behind us. The vineyards here are the steepest in Europe, some with a 68% gradient, there are ladders built into the hillside, I would like to see how they harvest the grapes.
We walked by the river into Neef, about 5 minutes from the parking area, I walked on the pavement and Paul walked on the wall next to the river (about a 12 foot drop into the river, I told him to come down but he likes climbing on things).
The sun is shining and it’s very peaceful here now, hope it’s quiet tonight.
