Day 111 Monday 30.05.2011
Location:  Minheim Stellplatz, Mosel Valley, Germany
Long / Lat : N 49º51.953’ E 006º56.519’
The baker calls at this stellplatz at about 8.30am but we were still asleep and missed him so Paul walked into the town to get milk and bread.
We haven’t seen any working boats on this stretch of the river but there are more people just messing about in boats, we saw someone water skiing this afternoon, we have also see a few fishermen, we hadn’t see anyone fishing further downstream.
It’s even hotter today 32º outside, even Paul is drinking plain water. After lunch we walked into Minheim, it’s a pretty place, very clean and tidy with lots flowers in window boxes and planters. So many wine merchants, a small bakers which also sells milk and tinned goods and a few cafes and restaurants.
While we have been in the Mosel we have noticed many of the towns have a connifer tree erected in the centre of the town, the lower branches have been cut off and the tree has decorated with ribbons.
We initially thought they were just lazy and hadn’t taken them down from Christmas but we have now been told that it’s a tradition in the Mosel that at the beginning of May the single young men from each town fell a tree, decorate it with ribbons and erect it in the centre of town, the single young men from surrounding towns try to steal the tree and the ribbons.
